Before assuming my administrative position, I taught 3rd grade for 25 years at The Campus Laboratory School. My favorite has always been chicks and ducks. Every year that I incubated and hatch eggs in my classroom was an amazing hands-on experience for the entire school. The first year, I thought it was complete chaos, but I quickly learned it was an incredible opportunity for students. So much learning was taking place without words even being spoken.

Intro:
I am so pleased to be joining The Campus Laboratory School of Carlow University! I have served as an Admissions Director in the past to a private Montessori School and enjoy helping families along their journey to find the right fit for their child’s education. With over 13 years of teaching experience, curriculum development, & classroom management techniques my efforts were acknowledged when I was the recipient of The Shari Parson Above & Beyond Excellence in Teaching Award. Over the course of my career, I have been actively involved in directing & assisting with all theatrical productions within the school districts I have taught. I am excited to meet all of the students & their families as we head into a stellar 2023!

I am so pleased to join The Campus Laboratory School of Carlow University! I am an international educator who has had the privilege of teaching middle school students in six countries around the world. I have also taught right up the road at The Ellis School. Throughout my career I have been involved in coaching Speech and Debate, Robotics, Dance and Girl Empowerment clubs. When I was in Oman I organized the After School Activities with the Athletics Director and coordinated a Fine Arts Festival with student participation from five different countries. I look forward to meeting all of the students and parents as the academic year begins next week and working with the school community to ensure that your children have motivating activities that provide learning opportunities for growth. We read the book, Serafina's Promise, about a young girl living in Haiti who secretly dreams of becoming a doctor. In this unit, students learn what it's like for some who live in developing countries. Students learn the geography, history, and culture of Haiti. The book is filled with figurative language as Serafina describes her life, dreams, and relationships. Students use an art journal as a way to connect to the text by interpreting figurative language and feelings through art.

I love teaching Algebra, especially solving and graphing equations, specifically when students are finally able to make connections rewriting equations, substituting variables, and plotting a graph. I enjoy when they can connect this to real-world scenarios. I also love to teach about data collection because it is one of the most applicable parts of math for when students are working on science fair projects. I love to hear when students are using their math skills in other classes as well and demonstrating generalization of the skill. In fifth grade, I love teaching fractions – all parts! First identifying what a fraction is, where we see them and how to make them, and then, finding equivalent fractions using multiplication, division, and ratio tables.

When studying about a specific continent we weave the culture of the continent into all aspects of the classroom curriculum from art and practical life activities, to music and mathematics. It's even more exciting for the children when we host their family members or they have opportunities to share their culture, customs, or travel experiences with the class.
